Description
The bronze presidential medallion is an interpretation of various symbols which represent the history of Marywood University.
The front of the medallion bears an image of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, garlanded with roses, pierced by a sword, and marked by her crown as Queen of Heaven. This image is taken from the seal of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Scranton, who founded Marywood College in 1915.
Above this image is a black diamond taken from the seal of Marywood University. The diamond represents the city of Scranton which is located in the heart of the once thriving anthracite coal district of Pennsylvania. Coal was king in Scranton at the time of Marywood's founding. The diamond is charged with the open book of learning and upon its pages are inscribed the Greek letters Alpha and Omega. These represent God as the beginning and end of all things and the foundation of a true education. Flanking the black diamond are carved lilies, symbolic of the Blessed Mother.
On the back of the medallion is an engraving of the front of the Liberal Arts Center which was the first college building erected on campus. The motto, Sanctitas, Scientia, Sanitas (Holiness, Knowledge, Health), is inscribed beneath the building, showing the ideals of the University which are identical with the goals of true humanism.
The Marywood University Presidential Medallion was created in 1988 for the inauguration of Sister Mary Reap, IHM, Ph.D., C.M.F.C., as the University's tenth president. It was designed and executed by Robert Griffith, Professor of Art.
The chain, designed and fabricated by Robert Griffith in 1998, was conceived to complement the medallion. It is comprised of hand forged and soldered links and plates in a scale which supports the physical and visual weight of the medallion. The design incorporates those symbols representing the life, history, and direction of Marywood University and specifically the Office of the President.
